Manifold Discussion: Re-Visiting the First Rule of Cartography

After thinking about what Bull and James have been posting about Manifold, I came to this conclusion about accessing data that is accessible. Flashback to your first cartography course. . . First rule of cartography: "If you ain't cheatin', you ain't trying." . . . Flashback to now. . . There. Just remember how maps used to be made: everyone copied from one another! The business world has hosed our global cartographic art while also making it better. i.e. USGS vs. Ordinance Survey. (Sorry, had to do it.) Then again which is more important: good maps? Or, more money?
